Bar Hopping in Bermuda

Dance clubs, music clubs, beach parties in summer, the Bermuda Music Festival and a wide selection of bars with live entertainment ensure that visitors to Bermuda never have a dull evening. Whether you are looking for a place to relax after dinner with a good Cuban cigar and single malt or you find yourself in the mood for some mellow vintage wine, Bermuda bars cover the entire spectrum of nightlife and entertainment options that vacationers choose.

Guests at various luxury hotels and resorts will find that their hotel has one or more bars with live music and dancing as well as shows as part of the entertainment. Bars and night clubs are scattered around the city of Hamilton mostly, and there are a few nightspots such as the White Horse Tavern in St. George’s. Among the bars, The Veranda Bar at the Elbow Beach Hotel is the place for an energetic salsa with your partner on Fridays. To mix with an elegant crowd and sip the perfect martini seated on comfortable sofas while listening to live music, there is no place like Jasmine at Fairmont Southampton. For a quiet evening nursing a cocktail while you play a game of pool, step into the Cellar at the same hotel.

British style pubs like the Frog and Onion Pub and Robin Hood Pub are the places one goes for hearty ale. For those on the lookout for a trendy chic bar the Pickled Onion, Ozone and Opus fit the bill with their hip décor and casual ambiance. To get a taste of Bermuda’s own Rum Swizzle, visitors to Bermuda flock to Swizzle Inn on Bailey’s Bay.

Café Lido and Mickey’s Beach Bistro and Bar at Elbow Beach Hotel as well as Tavern by the Sea are bars for those who don’t want to stray too far from the beach. Whichever Bermuda bars you patronize, don’t forget to taste the Dark ‘n’ Stormy, considered by many as Bermuda’s national drink.

Bermuda Nightlife

Vacationing in Bermuda, we wanted to explore the Bermuda dancing scene and check out some night spots where we could dance the night away. We were staying at the Fairmont Southampton where they had live entertainment and dancing in the Jasmine Lounge and in the Cellar .A couple we met at the pool table in the Cellar told us about the piano music and comedy shows that they had enjoyed at Henry VIII. Talking of dance, reggae and salsa, they said that the Spinning Wheel is the ideal place to go if you want to shake a leg or just sip a cocktail after a refreshing swim in the pool.

We explored Hamilton’s nightclubs, bars and pubs on our own, zipping from one place to another on our rented scooter. After dinner at Portofino, we went to Splash which was right next door. The energetic DJ and the vibrant music drew us to the dance floor almost immediately. Relaxing with a glass of wine on the outdoor patio, we decided to move next to Ozone, on Front Street. The music scores and the cool lighting there attract a young crowd, both locals and visitors. Flanagan’s Irish Pub and Bar in the same premises was another pub where we found the music to be as good as the food and drinks served.

On our way back from Crystal and Fantasy Caves, we decided to stop by at Swizzle Inn to get a taste of the famous Rum Swizzle. They had live music and we enjoyed browsing around in their gift shop for souvenirs and whacky gifts for our friends back home. The Verandah at Elbow Beach was where we had the best time dancing to the rhythmic beats of salsa on Friday evening.

Bermuda - things to know before you go

So you have decided to go to Bermuda for a holiday? Congratulations, it is a great choice to make. Prepare yourself for a mind-blowing holiday at a complete vacation destination with incredibly beautiful beaches to relax in, a wide spectrum of water sports and land activities to keep you occupied for as long as you wish to be. The world heritage site at St. George’s adds a dash of history to your tour itinerary while the Crystal and Fantasy Caves add to the wow factor. Scuba diving to explore the reefs and ships wrecks around the islands and snorkeling to see the colorful marine life, fishing and whale watching in season should be some of the items on your “Bermuda things to do” list.

Here are some interesting facts about Bermuda

1. If you area golfer, you will be pleased to know that Bermuda has more golf courses per square mile than any other country in the world.
2. Mainland Bermuda is a group of seven islands connected by bridges and there are around 130 other islands that make up the territory.
3. Distances are given in kilometers and meters.
4. Gas is called petrol and sold by the liter, not by the gallon.
5. Visitors cannot rent cars but you can rent a scooter or a moped and zip around on your own.
6. Remember to drive on the left hand side of the road and don’t get offended if you hear a car honking – it is probably a drive acknowledging a friend across the road.
7. You can also use the public transport. Buses and ferries ply to different places of interest to tourists with predictable regularity.

Pink bus stop poles indicate buses going towards Hamilton and blue poles point to buses going away from Hamilton. Tokens, tickets and cash fares in coins as well as single day passes for unlimited travel are common for buses and ferries.

Bermuda for shopping

After spending days at the beach and hours in the spa getting pampered, if you crave some serious retail therapy, Bermuda has plenty of options for the discerning shopper. What is the point in working out at the gym to keep your body in shape if you can’t show it off draped in the latest Lilly Pulitzer sundresses? From swimwear to suits and smart casual resort wear, women and men can shop for everything in Bermuda’s Hamilton city. The best brands from UK and Ireland are often available in outlets in Hamilton at very competitive rates, often lower than the prices in the country of origin.

Boutiques and shops selling accessories, jewelry, clothing, perfumes and fine tableware line Front Street in Hamilton city as well as King’s Square in St. George and Somerset’s shopping areas. Department stores like Marks & Spencer, A. S. Cooper and sons and Gibbons attract locals and visitors alike with their wide range of apparels and household wares.

For the more discerning shopper looking for international labels in accessories and clothes, there are several outlets in Bermuda like the English Sports Shop, Cecile, Stefanel and Mambo. Iana is the place for children’s clothing though you may have to go to Cecile to pick up Lilly Pulitzer sundresses for girls in bright colorful prints. Smart classy Bermuda shorts at English Sports Shop and cotton knits for ladies at Stefanel and Lily Pulitzer sun dresses in vibrant floral prints and colors make for chic resort wear.

Visitors to Bermuda’s Royal Naval Dockyard and the Maritme museum on Ireland Island can stop by at the Craft Market to pick up articles made of Bermuda cedar or even needlework and quilts. Exquisite handcrafted glassware at the Dockyard Glassworks and the delicious aroma wafting from the attached Dockyard Cakery draw many a visitor. If you are tempted to indulge in all the ten different flavored rum cakes, remember that you have to fit into those lovely Lilly Pulitzer sundresses.

Bermuda’s Beaches

Beaches in Bermuda come in all sizes. There is the Warwich Long Bay Beach which is Bermuda’s longest beach and there’s the famous Horseshoe Bay Beach, a favorite haunt for families and passengers of cruise ships. Divers and snorkeling enthusiasts prefer Elbow Beach for its proximity to Tarpon Hole and the coral reefs. Everyone from swimmers, beach combers, picnickers water sports enthusiasts to sun worshippers will find a beach that they love among the many beaches of Bermuda.

Horseshoe Bay Beach is easily is the most famous of Bermuda’s beaches. A public beach with changing facilities, a lifeguard on duty in summer and a cafe to cater to hungry visitors, the beach with its curved stretch of pink sand is a must-see for all visitors to Bermuda. In September, Bermuda Tourism sponsors a competition of sand sculptures on this beach.

Warwick Long Bay Beach in Warwick Parish is a part of the south shore beaches, trails and parks stretch that starts with Horseshoe Bay and extends eastwards. This beach is a popular spot for snorkeling and there are facilities for renting snorkeling gear at the beach. A coral reef close to the shore is visible from the secluded beach.

Closer to Horseshoe Bay Beach is the scenic Chaplin Bay, a quieter place for those in search of privacy. Stonehole Bay is a small cove separating Chaplin Bay and Jobson’s Cove, a small sandy beach cove enclosed by limestone cliffs all around. From Warwick Long Bay Beach to Jobson’s cove, it is a short walk along the sandy trail. Horse riding along the trails is a popular sport. Such is the variety of marine life in these waters that snorkeling enthusiasts compare snorkeling here to being in an aquarium.

Astwood Cove in Warwick Parish is picturesque location surrounded by steep rocky cliffs. A popular destination for beach weddings, this cove in Astwood Park is ideal for picnics and a day at the beach with the family. Unlike Warwick Long Bay Beach, the sea here can be rough and it is quite a hike down to the beach from the road.

Taking Vows in Puerto Rico

I've dreamed of getting married since I was a little girl. My ideal wedding was a luxury wedding on some Caribbean island. My husband and I would take our vows on the beach, against the sound of the ocean and surrounded by dancing coconut palms. And finally, I was getting married to the man of my dreams. Kevin was like an angel sent from heaven. Before him, I'd dated so many guys I couldn't even remember all their names.

With Kevin, I found that special someone and I couldn't wait to spend the rest of my life with him. We got engaged after just three months of dating and were planning to have a beautiful wedding in a luxury resort in the Caribbean. There were so many resorts to choose from but finally we settled on the El San Juan in Puerto Rico. It's a luxury hotel that's right on the beach. Our wedding package included a few extra days for the wedding couple so we'd get to have our honeymoon in the luxury resort as well.

My mom took it upon herself to see to the wedding details. She was so excited to have a wedding in the family. She made a list of all the things that needed to get done and roped in all and sundry to help accomplish the tasks. For my dress, I chose an off shoulder gown with crystals all over it. It was a Vera Wang gown. Since we were having our wedding out of the country, we'd need to have a small guest list. After checking and double checking the names, we settled on calling 50 people.

A relaxing holiday in the USVI

A holiday in the US Virgin Islands in the Lesser Antilles was just what we needed after the last six months of working 14-hour days to complete our project. We chose to go the USVI because it was closer, and there were no passport and visa hassles to handle. We could travel as soon as we were free and enjoy all the perks of a Caribbean vacation like sunny beaches, scuba diving, snorkeling and plenty of motorized water sports to choose from. We visited St. John and St. Croix while we stayed in Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas.

After a couple of days of lazing on the beach and some fun with motorized water sports like Jetskis from our beachfront resort, we set out to explore St. Thomas. The Amphibious bus tour of Charlotte Amalie and the harbor was fun and gave us an overall idea of St. Thomas. We also took a trip out to Water Isand , taking a ferry ride across from Crown Bay Marina. We spent the day biking around the island and swam in the cool waters of Honeymoon Beach on Water Island as we had had our fill of motorized water sports at our resort. Someone told us that Hassel Island is the place to go for hiking but we had already booked a hike on St. John.

Other than motorized water sports, trails for adventure sports enthusiasts interested in hiking or biking are available on St. John and in St. Croix. Birdwatching and hiking tours are also available on St. Thomas. At Coki Beach on the northeaster side of St. Thomas we visited a unique attraction for tourists – the Coral World, showcasing the fauna of the underwater world as well as the colorful sponges and corals that make the reefs their home

Wonders of the Caribbean Coral Beds

The Caribbean coral beds are one of the most beautiful natural sights in the world. Though not as large as the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, the Caribbean coral beds still play an important role in the oceanic ecosystem. Besides their scientific importance, they are also vital commercially. People from all over the world flock to the see the wonders of the Caribbean coral beds.

Not many people are aware of the fact that coral reefs are made up almost entirely of living creatures. The largest reef in the world i.e. the Great Barrier Reef has been built over millions of years and currently stretches about 100 miles in length and is over 400 feet high. In fact, it is one of the few structures visible from the moon. Reefs throughout the world are said to house close to 25% of the entire marine population in the earth's oceans.

Coral reefs can be seen off the shores of virtually all Caribbean islands and are a huge draw for tourists. The popularity of the Caribbean coral beds is so much that there are many resorts that actually offer specialized dive packages at discounted rates as part of their facilities.

Grand Cayman's Reef Resort is a luxury all-suite resort that offers the best diving on the entire island. The onsite Ocean Frontiers dive shop is a PADI 5-Star Gold Palm IDC Center, offering training in scuba diving for all levels, right from beginners to advanced divers. Besides dive classes, the dive shop offers equipment for rent and provides storage and cleaning services for divers who bring their own equipment.

The best part about staying at the Reef Resort is the dives of course. From the resort, divers can access more than a 100 excellent dive sites, including walls and shipwrecks, to explore the beauty of the Caribbean coral beds

Puerto Rico Luxury Wedding

I met Kevin six months back while I was out with my friends. We were at this luxury café listening to performances by local artists when he walked up to me and offered to buy me a drink. Well, a coffee actually. After that, one thing led to another and before we knew it, we were hurtling along the relationship rollercoaster and not wanting to get off.

Kevin proposing was a big step for me. Before him, I'd just been stumbling along from one guy to another. Nothing ever seemed to work for me and I had one failed relationship after another. When Kevin proposed, I felt on top of the world and we decided the most romantic thing to do was have a luxury wedding in Puerto Rico.

We hunted around for the best deals on wedding packages in luxury resorts in the Caribbean. There were lots of resorts in Puerto Rico but we settled on the luxury El San Juan hotel, located right on the beach in San Juan. We read tons of reviews, and scoured so many websites before we made our decision. After all, this was our dream day we were talking about.

The luxury hotel was really nice. They offered us a nice gazebo where we could have the wedding ceremony. The menu for the reception was lovely as well. Plus, they would provide a photographer and a videographer for the ceremony and reception. All that was left was to pick out my wedding gown. I went all out on that one. I'm wearing an off shoulder Vera Wang creation. My dress even has crystal detailing.

Winged Friends in Jamaica

We went to Jamaica with a group of our friends from the neighborhood where we live. Most of us had lived on the same street since childhood and had gone to the same school. Over the years we kept in touch through emails and phone calls. We would go hiking or camping together in the Rockies. The last time we met, someone suggested a trip to Jamaica with our spouses or partners and we agreed enthusiastically. Morgan, my husband, is in the travel business. He made the arrangements, co-coordinating with everyone and booked us into Couples Sans Souci, an exclusive couples-only resort in Ocho Rios.

We were all in great spirits, laughing and joking as we checked into the resort, commenting on the soothing sound of the waves and birdcalls. Once we got cleaned up, we girls went off to check the pools and gardens while the guys booked day trips with the resort’s personnel. Strolling around the gardens on the well-laid paths, we were fascinated by the colorful flowers and the pretty butterflies flitting about. We also saw some exotic birds and heard some beautiful bird calls. Later on, while we were lounging by the pool, we told the guys that we had seen some exotic birds in the gardens. A gentleman reading a book under a tree nearby looked up and pointed out to a hummingbird hovering over a bunch of flowers in one of the lower branches. Around the property we saw a kingfisher, some finches, green parrots, white-winged woodpeckers, and ring-tailed pigeons over the next few days.

We would meet him and his wife at dinner and talk to him about the exotic birds in Jamaica. He told us that on his trip to Dunn's River waterfalls and the Blue Mountains, he was able to spot several exotic birds in the wild like the Jamaican Oriole and Jamaican Eurphonia. He was hoping he could spot Jamaica’s national bird, the Doctor bird or the red-billed streamertail on his next outing.

A Trip to the Turks and Caicos

I was not really keen to travel to the Caribbean again. Every time someone talked about a trip to the Caribbean I remembered the bad experience I had when I visited Jamaica last summer. My troubles began the minute I stepped out of the hotel. We had a long wait at the airport after which our hotel pick-up finally showed up. I managed to misplace my purse at the airport which had all my important documents and credit cards in it. We ended up spending a lot of time on day one at a little police station instead of a warm comfortable luxury hotel room.

Well, I managed to forget this unpleasant episode and was really looking forward to the next day at the hotel. I guess I was hoping for too much. My troubles it seemed had just begun. My husband, Sam, loves to eat and picked up some snacks from the stalls on the beach. I ate the snacks as I was a bit hungry myself. I suddenly started feeling very uncomfortable and had trouble breathing. The snacks contained peanuts and I was allergic to them. I ended up spending a few days in the hospital. I was not too keen to continue with our travel plans and we returned home.

This entire trip left a very bad taste in my mouth and I didn’t want to travel to the Caribbean again. It was only after my teenage daughter Hannah insisted that the Turks and Caicos was a beautiful place that I started considering the idea of going there. We went online and checked out a couple of travel reviews on the net. Some of our friends who had visited the place strongly recommended that we should see the place. We finally ended up going to the lovely islands of the Turks and Caicos and had a great time.

A Therapeutic Trip to Puerto Rico

The first few things that come to mind when you talk about summer travel to the Caribbean is sun, sand, surf, and plenty of smiles. My trip to Puerto Rico was filled with all this and a lot more. The relaxing trip was what the doctor had recommended for me and exactly what I needed at that point of time.

As soon as I reached my luxury resort, the first thing I did was to reserve a spa session for myself. The spa session was the best part of my entire travel plan to the island. The spa at the resort is considered to be among the best spas in Puerto Rico. I scheduled the visit to the spa towards the end of my trip since I knew the travel and activity would tire me out. The spa was wonderful. The ambiance was tranquil and calm. The interior was minimalist yet elegant and the soft colors enhanced its appeal further. The person at the desk welcomed me and handed me a form to be filled in and which she said would help to identify the ideal treatment for me. After filling out the form she suggested that I go for the Balinese massage.

I quickly changed into one of the robes at the spa and was led by a therapist into a treatment room. The therapist was a true professional and she ensured that I didn’t feel uncomfortable in any way. As I lay on the table, she began her massage and I could feel the muscles relax and the stress that had built up melt away. I happily dozed off while she continued massaging me and woke up to realize that the massage was nearly over. After such a relaxing session at the spa, I decided to travel more to the Caribbean.

Hiking Trip in Nassau

I never thought one could go hiking in the Bahamas! Well I guess you can and my friend had already found out all about the nature tours and hikes one could go on while on the island. Wish I could just run away! Why should I go hiking when I can just laze around on the beach and get the perfect tan during my vacation, which I can later show off back home!

Susan knew I would try to squiggle my way out of the hiking trip so she tried to keep it from me until the last moment and spring a surprise on me. And surprise she did! I tried my best to excuse myself but finally I had to give in. Her enthusiasm was infectious and I didn’t want to break her heart. I just couldn’t imagine myself getting up early in the morning during my vacation to go on some useless hike watching birds and animals but I found myself doing exactly the same! We were up at the crack of dawn and waiting for the tour guide, Susan was as chirpy as an early morning bird.

Finally, when our guide arrived I must admit I didn’t think hiking was that bad. You would think so too, especially if you have such a good-looking guy as your tour guide. While Susan was enthusiastic about watching the birds, I was enthusiastic about watching the guide. All through the tour, I busy watching him rather than the animals and birds. And, by the end of the hiking trip I was ready to sign up for another tour. Can you believe it I was intending to go on another tour but fortunately better sense prevailed and I was back to the beaches soaking up the sun and lazing around on the soft sands.

Try Pastechi in Aruba

I just love to eat and whenever I travel to any place I always make it a point to try out the food available in the region. Be it pizzas, nachos, pastas or pastries I just love devouring all these mouth-watering delights whenever I go to some place new.

This time round I was on a luxury trip to the Caribbean and was quite determined to try out this particular food item I had heard about. All the review of Aruban luxury resorts talked about this local dish called Pastechi. This patty has the flavor of sweet bread and is stuffed with ham, cheese or minced beef. It had a crisp exterior and a stuffed interior. I had to just get my hands on it and sink my teeth into a Pastechi and check out if it really tasted as good; sweet on the outside and savory on the inside.

I thought it made sense to visit a local restaurant in Aruba where chances of finding the most authentic and genuine Pastechi were higher instead of a luxury place. I made inquiries with the lobby staff about where the best Pastechi could be found. They were most helpful and recommended a number of restaurants where I could try out some Pastechi. I however was looking out for something small and genuinely Aruban. One member of the staff recommended a quaint little eatery that seemed perfect.

Once I finished with the check-in formalities I decided to go out and look for the restaurant. I found the place quite easily and checked out the menu. Well, it seemed that they did have quite a variety of Pastechi; Pastechi di keshi (stuffed with cheese), Pastechi di carni (stuffed with beef and raisins), Pastechi di Pisca (stuffed with tuna), and Pastechi di ChopSoy (stuffed with chicken/ham). I was spoilt for choice. I decided to start with the first item on the menu which was the Pastechi di carni. I have a very healthy appetite and ordered the larger size.

Once the waiter came across with my order, I gobbled it as soon as possible. It was absolutely divine. All the reviews I had read about the Pastechi were absolutely correct. I decided to try out all the varieties of Pastechi on every day of my luxury holiday in Aruba.

Carnival in Santo Domingo

We decided to go to the Dominican Republic for our holiday in the Caribbean this year. When we were talking to our friends about a vacation in the Dominican Republic, someone suggested that we should go there when they have a carnival. The talk then turned to the various carnivals in the Caribbean and how one gets a real taste of the local food and culture in the street fairs set up at carnival time.

So we booked our hotel rooms in Malecon in Santo Domingo in the south coast of the Dominican Republic. From our hotel, it was just a short walk to one of the best viewing spots along the carnival’s route. We were there, well ahead of the start time, occupying a prime spot, armed with our water bottles, cameras and sunglasses. The blazing sun would have dampened anyone’s spirits, but the people of Santo Domingo and the participants from all over the country were in high spirits. Food stalls and drink vendors did brisk business and so did the handicraft stalls set up along the route. Buses filled with Caribbean tourists were constantly arriving and the sidewalks were soon filled with onlookers behind the barricades. The music reached our ears before we saw the dancers. The colorful costumes in satin and the masks with scary horns and teeth were very creative. Some of the tableaux from the coastal towns had the sea and marine fauna as their theme.

We were so involved in watching the parade, the dancers and the cheering crowds that we did not realize that four hours had passed. As we walked back to our hotel we marveled at how much more the Caribbean had to offer, besides wonderful beaches and glorious food.

Colorful carnivals

When we were in New Orleans to see the Mardi Gras Carnival with our friends, the conversation turned from the antics of the revelers to their weird costumes and the beads that one collects. We talked about the yummy street food, the beer that flowed and the high spirits of the participants and the spectators. Monica and Tracy then told us about the carnivals that they had seen in the Caribbean in the Dominican Republic and in St. Martin before the start of Lent. .

Aruba has a lighting parade in Oranjestad in February before the Grand parade ahead of Ash Wednesday. Antigua’s carnival in July and August is a celebration of music and dance where troupes from the region can showcase their talent in competitions. St. Lucia, Curacao, Trinidad and Tobago, St. Vincent and the Grenadines have their own carnivals in the Caribbean that express the joie de vivre of their people.

We were in Santo Domingo the next year to see a typical Caribbean carnival. The costumes in a myriad of colors and shapes and the “devil” masks with dramatic horns and fangs worn by the revelers were a treat to watch. Crowds line the streets behind the barricades long before the start of the carnival. Cheers go up as the floats and the participating troupes from various regions and towns pass. Some of the towns along the coast had floats with a maritime theme. As the procession drew to a close, we noticed that several of the onlookers simply followed the carnival. We too joined the throngs on the street. As we tried to move along the jostling crowds, we were directed by the policemen controlling the crowd to a side street that would lead us to the head of the carnival. Taking the side street, we noticed little stalls selling food and drinks and even one or two selling handmade trinkets and masks. You bet I picked up two masks as souvenirs of our wonderful experience in a Caribbean carnival.

Carefree Holiday in the Caymans

A couple of friends fresh out of the university, we were looking for a holiday in the Caribbean when Maggie suggested the Reef Resort, where her parents owned a condo right on the white-sand beach. We jumped at the chance to spend a week on the beach with no rent to pay. However, she warned us that we would need a car if wanted to go to town or to the famous Seven Mile Beach. Of course, the concierge at the resort could arrange for local tours, she said. We packed our bags the moment our flight tickets were confirmed and left for the Cayman Islands by the end of the week.

Here we are at the Reef Resort and life is bliss. The white-sand beach is inviting, and the beach chairs under the palm trees offer a restful snooze after a vigorous swim or an energetic game of beach volleyball. We take bike trips in the afternoon to explore the region, but get back to the condo to watch the sunset from the white-sand beach, unwilling to miss the sight even for a single day. Swimming in the infinity pool, watching the sunset, our evenings are serene, a time to savor the beauty of the peaceful surroundings.

It is not that we spent all our time at the Reef Resort by the three pools or on the beach. Far from it! We went snorkeling to see the vibrant marine life in the coral reefs and for a lark, we also tried power snorkeling and found it to be quite enjoyable. The visit to Stingray City was memorable, those lovely graceful creatures were absolutely endearing. Oh, while we were there, there was a lovely wedding on the white-sand beach with colorful tropical blooms in the bride’s bouquet. Since Maggie knew the bride and her parents, we were all invited to the wedding and the banquet.

In addition, Barbados offers visitors an opportunity to experience the hospitality extended by the friendly locals.

A Therapeutic Trip

Summer travel in the Caribbean usually brings to mind images of fun in the sun, sand, and surf and lots of smiles. My trip to Puerto Rico too was filled with a lot of fun and smiles. The trip was exactly what I had needed and the doctor had recommended to get rid of all the stress.

The high point of my trip to Puerto Rico was the reservation I had made for a massage session at the spa as soon as I had reached the luxury resort. The massage was scheduled such that it was towards the end of my trip since I knew that all the travel and activities would take a toll on me. The trip to the spa was amazing. The ambiance at the spa was relaxing and calm and the moment I entered a receptionist who was pleasant and friendly welcomed me. She handed me a form to fill up and explained to me that it would help them to select the right kind of therapy according to the information given. The spa interiors were done up in soft soothing colors that was accentuated by the mellow lights.

Soon they suggested that the Balinese massage would be ideal for me. I was given a robe to change into and then they led me to one of the treatment rooms where a therapist awaited my arrival. As soon as I lay on the table, she began the massage and slowly relaxed all my tensed muscles. I could feel the stress I had gathered during my travel melt away. The therapist was good at her job and knew how to make you feel comfortable. I was dozing mid-way through the session and woke up towards the end of the massage feeling rejuvenated and refreshed. I guess I will travel back to Puerto Rico for another massage.

I’m back from a Jamaican Trip

My luxury trip to the Caribbean was most enjoyable. I was really stressed out on the personal front and desperately needed a luxury break. I have just split from my husband of 18 years and the entire process was really messy. I managed to get custody of my kids and rights to the house in New York.

My mother was quite keen that I travel and volunteered to come and stay with the kids while I was away. My kids insisted as well, and I had no choice but go on the trip. My friends did a lot of research and checked a couple of websites before zeroing in on a place in the Caribbean.

We decided to go to Jamaica. This was mainly because one of my friends knew a manager at one of the hotels in Jamaica and we managed to get a fabulous discount on an all-inclusive package. Fred got us an upgrade in accommodation and we were moved from a regular room to a suite. There was a complimentary bottle of wine and a fruit basket kept for us in the suite. Anne’s friend arranged a couple of tours for us that were really informative. The visit to the rum distillery was also very interesting. We spent a lot of time on the beach and had fun trying out the different water sports offered at the beach.

We managed to take time out for a bit of shopping, and I picked up some lovely handicrafts for my mother and kids. On the last day, we spent some time in the spa. There were a number of treatments offered at the spa. I opted for a relaxing body massage which would help get rid of the toxins from the body and re-hydrate my skin. I also tried out a facial, which made me look much younger.

It was a great vacation and I have promised to take my kids to Jamaica next summer.

Enjoy a Vacation in Jamaica

I can’t believe what a great time we had in the Caribbean. I joined my friends on a luxury vacation and have come back totally relaxed. I guess I needed to take a luxury break. Things have been bad recently. I just got divorced from my husband of 18 years and it was a real messy affair. I finally managed to get custody of the kids and also half the assets we owned. It’s finally over now and I can get my life back on track.

I had to plan things a bit to ensure my luxury trip to the Caribbean went off well. My mom volunteered to come and stay at home with the kids. In fact my kids were really happy for me and urged me to go on and not worry about them.

Things were pretty smooth after that and we were finally on our way to Jamaica. Anne, one of my friends was a good friend of the manager in the Jamaican hotel we stayed at. We got a fantastic discount on an all-inclusive package thanks to him. Our accommodation was upgraded to a suite which had its own swimming pool. On arrival there was a bottle of wine and a fruit basket kept in the room for us. The manager of the hotel also arranged a number of tours for us such as a plantation and heritage tour and a rum distillery tour. We went snorkeling and diving and explored the waters around Jamaica.

Our last day in Jamaica was spent in the spa. All of us opted for some great luxury treatments such as body massages and facials all administered by well-experienced staff. In fact when I got back home my kids complimented me that I looked 10 years younger. They were quite pleased with the lovely gifts I had picked for them in Jamaica.

I will definitely be visiting Jamaica again, but this time with my kids.

Jamaica – A great destination

My luxury trip to Jamaica was a huge success. I would have been disappointed if it wasn’t. This is because I’ve just gone through a lot; a messy divorce with a fight over custody of the kids and division of assets. I managed to get custody of the kids and keep the house in New York. I had been married for 18 years, and every thing over in a couple of months. I was devastated.

Everyone around me suggested that I need a break, and some of my friends who were already planning a luxury trip cajoled me to go along. Things fell in place when my mom agreed to come and stay over. My kids thought that I needed to get away from everything for a while and insisted that I go on a luxury vacation.

My friends had planned a trip to Jamaica. Anne’s boyfriend was working as a manager at one of the hotels in Jamaica. He gave us a fabulous discount on an all-inclusive package and took good care of us. On arrival we were quite pleased when we were told that our room was upgraded to a suite. This meant that we had a more spacious rooms and our private Jacuzzi. When we got to our suite on the first day we found that there was a bottle of wine and fruit basket left there for us. The rest of the days were spent exploring Jamaica. We went on a couple of tours such as the plantation and heritage tour and we also saw the Ipswich caves and a rum distillery. We had loads of fun trying out a number of water sports as well. We went shopping on one evening and I managed to purchase loads of gifts to take back home.

Our last day on the island was less hectic. We went to the spa and had the staff pamper us with some rejuvenating treatments. I went in for a facial and a body massage. Both were excellent. The body massage re-hydrated my skin and the facial made me look a lot younger.

I came back from my vacation totally relaxed and ready to face the world. I enjoyed my self thoroughly and have promised to take my kids on a luxury trip next year.

A Jamaican Vacation

I’ve never enjoyed myself so much in a long time. The Caribbean trip I went on was a huge success. It was a luxury trip and a much needed luxury trip. Things have not been too good on the personal front and I desperately needed a break. I’ve just got a divorce from my husband and that too after 18 years of marriage. It was a bit rough and there were a couple of issues such as who would get the kids, which made things more difficult. I finally got custody of the kids and also the house in New York.

When my friends invited me on this trip I was not too keen to go. However it was my kids who convinced me that I should go. When my mother agreed to keep the kids at her place for a few days, things fell in place and I was ready for my luxury trip.

After a lot of deliberation we decided to go to Jamaica. My friend Anne managed to get us a discounted package at one of the hotels in Jamaica. She had a very good friend who was a manager at one of the hotels and thanks to him we got a royal treatment at the hotel. Our room was upgraded and we moved to a suite that had a private garden and pool. In the suite we had a bottle of complimentary bottle of wine and a fruit basket kept for us. For all the days we were at the hotel we had a lot of fun. We went on a couple of tours organized for us by Anne’s friend. Tours such as a heritage tour and one of the Ipswich caves and a distillery were really interesting. We also had a blast trying our hand at a number of water sports.

We also spent some time in the spa and pampered ourselves with some fabulous luxury treatments. Well-experienced staff administered treatments that helped us get rid of toxins from the body. I also opted for a facial that helped me look younger. At around four we headed for the shops where I purchased some great gifts for my mum and kids.

Jamaica is a fabulous place and I have promised to take my mom and kids to Jamaica this summer.

Old San Juan on foot

Architects love to walk around ancient cities, observing the structure of heritage buildings, explaining nuances of the particular style of architecture and pointing out the best architecture in the city they are in. My father is no exception and he was in his element when we went to San Juan, Puerto Rico. Old San Juan, according to him, and our guidebook, has the best architecture from Puerto Rico’s colonial period. He insisted that we spend at least two days walking around the town to see the marvels of Spanish colonial architecture. Protests and groans from the rest of the family led to a compromise and we settled on a one-day walking tour..

In spite of the fact that we had a knowledgeable guide assigned to accompany us, dad insisted on buying guide books and picking up colorful brochures at the visitors center. I browsed around the craft market nearby while he was busy collecting him maps and books. Armed with these and bottled water, we joined the group to see the best architecture that Old San Juan had to offer.

Castillo de San Cristobal, also called Saint Christopher Castle, is a fort which was completed in 1785. It is, apparently one of the largest forts in Puerto Rico. I clicked pictures of the city and the sea from there. But my favorite spot of the day was El Morro.. I had seen posters of Puerto Rico with the images of those sentry posts on the periphery of the fort. With those huge lawns and winding passages and dungeons, it represented, for me, the best architecture of the colonial period. For once, my father agreed, though he changed his mind once he saw Cuartel de Ballaja or the Ballaja Barracks. These barracks had a central courtyard that was built over a reservoir and large balconies with arches. The complex included warehouses, prison cells as well as kitchens and dining rooms for the officers who stayed there..

La Casa Blanca has each room decorated with period furniture that is in tune with the history of the house. This home has been continuously occupied for the last two centuries by Ponce de Leon and his descendants. Another candidate for the best architecture label, the house is a fascinating reminder of the city’s heritage.

In search of Conch

We got out first view of the underwater world when we tried diving during our holiday in the Turks and Caicos. Friends who are divers and snorkelers encouraged us to try snorkeling, snuba and scuba diving when told them that we were going to Provo for our vacation. Divers and snorkelers formed a majority of the guests our beach resort. The hotel tour desk recommended a local tour operator who had plenty of experience dealing with divers and snorkelers who were novices.

We had our first scuba lesson in the resort’s swimming pool. Once we gained enough confidence our guide took to us diving sites close to the beach, where the visibility was very good. For the dive spots a little farther, we were picked up from our hotel by water taxi. We tried several sites around Grace Bay, Pine Cay, Salt Cay, North West Point and South West Reef in the Turks and Caicos Islands. We saw several typers of sponges, coral, and all kinds of marine life, from rays to dolphins and turtles.

When we were in Turks and Caicos we had conch with almost every meal, and we loved it. We heard about Da Conch Shack and went there to gorge on cracked conch, a dish of deep fried conch pieces.. The next day, we told other divers and snorkelers in the group about it. After our snorkeling trip, our guide took us to dive for conch amidst the sea grass and plankton. We took the conch back with us to have the chef toss a fresh conch salad for us.

Talking about this special Caribbean delicacy, we heard of the Conch Festival in Blue Hills in the Turks and Caicos. The festival has a competition for the conch chefs and anyone who loves conch should make it a point to attend this festival. There is love music, dancing, conch blowing and a conch hunt in the sea. The atmosphere is family friendly, and the mojito that flows in the bars keeps the spirits high. and the competition keen. The festival concludes with a party on the beach.

Planning a wedding in the Caribbean

Among the various islands in the Caribbean that offer spectacular wedding venues, the Dominican Republic stands a class apart. Weddings on the beaches of Punta Cana or Playa Bavaro have the advantage of the services of experienced wedding coordinators of famous resorts to help the couple organize an unforgettable event. Dreams Palm Beach in Punta Cana offers three different wedding packages to couples. Couples can marry on the beach, in a gazebo or on a terrace overlooking the sea.

Sun Village Resort and Spa, on Cofresi Beach near Peurto Plata offers the couple the option to customize their celebrations with unique touches like fireworks, horse drawn carriages or helicopter rides. Indoor and outdoor venues, a spa to pamper the bride and the groom, personalized décor at the venue chosen and a choice of gourmet food for the wedding banquet are other amenities at the hotel’

Getting married at Casa de Campo gives couples the option of renting luxury villas for families and friends. The Altos de Chavon, a replica of a 16th century European village here has a St. Stanislaus Cathlic church for the ceremony with breathtaking views of the Chavon river valley from the hill top. Each wedding at the Casa de Campo is customized to suit the couples requests, there are no cookie cutter packages here.

Finding a place to get married in the Caribbean is as simple as logging on to a travel website and checking out the videos on the site. Luxury trip to St. Lucia

Visiting exotic places is what my friends and I have wanted to do for a while. St. Lucia, a small avocado-shaped island in the Caribbean, held our interest as we had heard quite a lot about it. My friend, Bessy, has this habit of checking out a particular luxury travel website before going on any vacation. In fact we have been discussing this trip for a long time and it was finally coming true. It was a tough task coordinating schedules and ensuring that everyone was free at the same time to enjoy the luxury vacation.

The big day has finally dawned. All four of us adults, women to top it , and firm about leaving back our cares and having a great time in the lap of luxury. Just a glance at the Vacation Club that overlooks Marigot Bay gave us a feel that we had selected the right place. Warm rooms in this two-story villa were warm and airy spelt comfort and luxury. The patio was just fantastic. I could imagine myself sitting there and sipping hot coffee while reading a book.

The first day went off just discovering local areas. All that walking made us hungry enough to eat a horse. We tucked in Creole food by the waterfront and watched the locals carry on their daily chores. The sailing trip to view the Pitons was fantastic, and the aquamarine waters looked really cool and inviting. Tina, who just loves birds decided to go on a bird-watching trip the next day while we decided to visit the spa to soothe our tired muscles. We sure were not disappointed with the Lapli Spa at The Discovery at Marigot Bay. Our sojourn at the spa left us truly rejuvenated.

I don’t know when the next two days whizzed by. We just lounged by the sea and tried out the local fare. Gosh! The break was most deserving. We tried the restaurants in town, made some great purchases and visited the local attractions.

A vacation that we a going to remember for a long while. We are definitely going to go back next year. Even though we have just loved this resort, we will stay at some different luxury resort

Jamaica is your dream Caribbean island. It is a pleasure to travel in Jamaica as it has such a variety of options to suit all kinds of travelers. It has a vibrant music scene with a nightlife to match to cater to fun seekers, pristine sandy beaches bordered by coconut palms that families and couples enjoy, and a wealth of water and adventure sports options for thrill seekers. What adds to the charm is the warmth and friendliness of Jamaicans whose hospitality is impeccable. They make sure that every visitor who travels to Jamaica has a memorable stay and leaves with promises to return for another visit.

An immensely popular Caribbean holiday destination, Jamaica receives thousands of visitors, mainly from North America and Europe. In winter, vacationers in search of a pleasant climate and sunny beaches flock to this island with their friends and families. Diving, snorkeling, and wind surfing enthusiasts will find numerous tour operators who will take them to the best sites around the island. Sunset cruises and deep sea fishing trips are also popuilar. Scenic golf courses like Sandals Gold and Country Club in Ochos Rios invite golfers to indulge in their favorite sport while on vacation. Kingston, Montego Bay and Negril also offer some challenging courses, making this island ideal for a golfing vacation.

With several architectural reminders of its colonial history, Kingston, Jamaica’s capital attracts tourists to visit heritage sites like Fort Charles, Rose Hall Great House and Rio Nuevo site monument. Music lovers would enjoy the visit to The Bob Marley Museum.

When the sun goes down, all of Jamaica seems to get into party mode. Rhythms that make your feet tap and tempt you to swing to the beats pour out of bars and nightclubs or on the beaches, where more resorts have beach parties.

The one thing that you should not miss in Jamaica is jerk chicken, an aromatic barbecued dish that most restaurants and beach side stalls offer. Apart with the local cuisine, rum and fresh seafood dishes, diners can opt for a variety of cuisines from Creole to Pacific Rim or Spanish cuisine besides, of course, American fast food.

Oranjestad for Fishing

Oranjestad is the capital of Aruba, and is a quaint town with buildings and houses that sport multicolored facades and is reminiscent of the Dutch colonial era. Situated in the southern part of the country, the beautiful marina here is always teeming with life thanks to the numerous private yachts, cruise ships, tour boats, and local fishing boats.

The town is known for its fishing opportunities and the south coast is where most of the action is. The fishing activity for local fishermen begins with the first rays of the sun when they set sail on their expedition and return back with their catch of fresh fish. Home to many large fish species such as the marlin, the fishermen usually prefer the simple hand-line and bait as they are effective against strong winds and currents. Some fishermen also venture into the rough choppy sea on the north coast of the island with their boats. Since, the rough sea tends to pool the fish together near the limestone rocks. This makes it easier for the fishermen to bait and catch the fish.

For fishing enthusiasts Oranjestad is a favorite holiday destination because the warm here teem with game fish throughout the year. Visitors can bait for a variety of fishes like the sailfish, shark, wahoo, blue and white marlin, tuna and the likes. The best season for fishing is between October and February when one can rent local fishing boats for half a day or a full day, these expeditions can be booked through the hotel tour desks too. Some restaurants even offer to cook the fish for you if you are interested in tasting your prized catch. Another popular activity here is fly fishing.

The Seaport Marina in downtown Oranjestad near the waterfront is a well protected harbor and offers sophisticated docking facility for yachts, sea faring sloops and local fishing boats. It also offers numerous water sports facilities such as sailing, diving, and snorkeling. The submarine tours too are a popular attraction with both children and adults.

Visit the Dominican Republic

Things have been pretty rough after my split with Eric and when my friends suggested a trip to the Dominicans, I jumped at the chance to travel. My wisest decision I would say. I had read a couple of reviews on the Dominican Republic and was a little apprehensive about what I read. Most reviews said that the place was not safe for women. Well once we traveled, we were in for a surprise. The streets were pretty dirt free and those selling their wares on the street did not really trouble us.

The package we opted for was flexible, and gave us the option of finding more about the city without being rushed. We booked our vacation on a travel website online. The package included stay at the Iberostar Costa Dorada which was a lovely hotel on the beach which meant we had easy access to the sand and water. The food at the hotel was excellent and the dining options were many. Shopping at the mall in the hotel saved us the bother of findings shops outside. There was a casino in the hotel where luck didn’t favor my friend, Sandra.

The icing on the cake was our trip to the city of Santo Domingo. I was mesmerized by the charm that exuded from the Zona Colonial. In fact for those traveling to the area, if time permits, it is a great idea to travel and check-out the shops which have some of the most beautiful amber jewelry. As I have the adventurous streak in me I opted to take a trip on the Dominican Outback Safari and the Scubadoo Underwater adventure, both which I thoroughly enjoyed. When I had a little time after all the travel, I headed for the beach and managed to get tanned.

The nightlife in the Dominican Republic is rocking. I learnt here that the Meringue started off in the Dominican Republic, but it didn’t really matter as I was too busy enjoying myself and dancing till I was ready to drop dead. We found the underground La Guacara Taina disco a great place to hang-out at. The music and the guys out there were both worth the travel I would say. I sure am going to remember my travel to the Dominican Republic for a long time.

Why Jamaica?

Ever wondered why Jamaica is the most visited tourist destination in the Caribbean? I think it is because it has something for everyone. Banana boats in Jamaica

My grand mom is from England, but has spent the best part of her life on the family’s plantation in Jamaica. The interesting things she would tell us about her trip to the family manor in Southampton kept us engaged. She used to have a great time with cousins and uncles while on vacation.

She had some interesting times which she talked about. The journeys she took on “banana boats” along with other plantation owners and their family members sounded like real fun. The banana boats were actually meant to carry cargos of bananas from Jamaica, but cabins on the boats were used for passengers to stay. In addition, they used to play bingo or watch films in the lounge area. You should hear about the chocolate chip-marshmallow banana boats dessert my grand mom used to talk about. It would really make your mouths water.

Our honeymoon was spent in a luxury resort in Montego Bay. It was my husband’s idea. The resort at which we stayed had a website with information about activities such as “rides in banana boats”. It made me happy that we were finally going to experience what she talked about. I was in for a shock when I saw what the “banana boats” of today looked like. They were nothing like what my grandma described. Long inflatable yellow colored tubes were attached to a motor boat and pulled across the water at great speed. 8 to 10 people sat astride the boat and enjoyed the thrilling ride on the sea. I was a bit scared when we started and held on to my husband for dear life. Some guys actually fell into the water when the boat swerved and turned. But it was nothing to worry about as we had life jackets on. It was really an exciting ride and I enjoyed it so much that I tried it again when we went to Aquasol Theme Park in Montego Bay.

I must mention that the banana boats that we were served for dessert were really lovely and delicious.
